Ecosystem Services of Bats


Mammals are warm blooded, hairy animals that give birth to live young, which they then nurse. Since mammals took over the world from the reptiles they have diversified into thousands of species. The second largest group of mammals is the bats, but since they work at night they are poorly understood and little appreciated. Bats have a fascinating life story and provide important ecosystem services. We spoke with David Schmidly about bats' contributions to ecosystems and to human welfare.
