Organic Farms Suffer No More Pest Damage
Than Conventional Farms
Farmers apply pesticides to their crops for the simple reason that if they don't, their crops will be damaged or destroyed. Organic farmers don't use synthetic pesticides yet they still manage to stay in business. Deborah Letourneau, a crop scientist, asked the question, Is there a difference in pest damage between organic farms and conventional farms? Her research team compared conventional and organic tomato farms in California and found no difference in insect pest levels or crop damage1.
We spoke with Professor Letourneau about her research and what it means for farmers.
